Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is the most widely used and the largest amount of cellulose in the world today. It is obtained by immersing cellulose raw material in 17.5%-18% sodium hydroxide solution, and then squeezing to remove excess lye. The chemical reaction performance is much greater than that of cellulose. It is an important intermediate product for the manufacture of viscose fibers and certain cellulose derivatives. For example, it can react with carbon disulfide to generate sodium cellulose xanthate. The appearance is similar to that of cellulose, but due to the expansion effect, the thickness of the fiber increases and the length decreases. After treatment with water, it is regenerated into hydrated cellulose. The main use of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is as a thickener in the food industry, as a drug carrier in the pharmaceutical industry, and as a binder and anti-resettling agent in the daily chemical industry.
